A small apiary with a deep appreciation for the honeybee
Turin Family Farm is a small family-operated apiary and educational farm project based in Turin, Georgia. What began as a fascination with honeybees evolved into a deep commitment to understanding the remarkable biology, behavior, and social organization of one of nature's most important pollinators.
Our hives produce small-batch raw wildflower honey that reflects the changing nectar flows of the Georgia seasons. Depending on the time of year, our bees forage from sources including Dutch White Clover, Crimson Clover, wildflowers, native trees, and countless other flowering plants throughout the surrounding countryside. No two harvests are exactly alike.
"But Turin Family Farm is about more than honey."
We believe people are increasingly disconnected from where food comes from and from the natural systems that quietly support everyday life. Honeybees are a perfect example. Most people see the finished jar of honey but never witness the complexity, discipline, communication, and sheer workload required to produce it.
A single healthy colony may contain over 50,000 bees during peak season. Worker bees progress through multiple roles during their lives — cleaning cells, feeding larvae, building wax comb, guarding the entrance, regulating hive temperature, processing nectar, and eventually foraging across the landscape in search of pollen, nectar, water, and propolis. Every member of the colony has a role, and the survival of the hive depends on cooperation at a level rarely seen elsewhere in nature.
Our live hive cam was created to give people a real-time window into that world. Viewers can observe pollen foragers returning to the hive, orientation flights by young bees, guard bees inspecting arrivals, entrance fanning during hot weather, nectar flow surges, robbing pressure, and seasonal changes in colony behavior. During swarm season, activity at the entrance can intensify dramatically as the colony prepares to reproduce naturally.
Like many small-scale beekeepers across the country, Turin Family Farm experienced significant colony losses during previous seasons. Rebuilding the apiary reinforced our commitment to stronger genetics, attentive hive management, responsible mite control, and a deeper understanding of honeybee health and behavior.
That experience continues to shape how we manage our colonies today.
At Turin Family Farm, we prioritize responsible hive management practices and avoid the use of conventional commercial pesticides inside our colonies whenever possible. Our varroa mite management approach emphasizes organic acids, mechanical controls, and carefully selected essential oil–based treatments commonly used in natural beekeeping systems.
Healthy bees, clean comb, strong genetics, and attentive hive management remain our first line of defense.
In addition to beekeeping, Turin Family Farm continues to explore mushroom cultivation, sustainable growing systems, environmental monitoring, and educational agricultural content designed to reconnect people with the natural world.
Whether you're here to watch the live hive cam, learn about bees, follow the seasonal activity of the apiary, or purchase raw honey produced directly from our hives, we're glad you stopped by.
Thanks for visiting Turin Family Farm.
